Engineering Loyalty in the Age of Real-Time Intelligence

Anupama Gupta is a customer strategy and insights professional with expertise in loyalty programs, CRM, and data-driven marketing. An alumna of Delhi School of Economics, she has built strong capabilities in translating analytics into actionable business strategies, helping organizations enhance customer engagement, retention, and long-term growth across dynamic markets. She is currently Director - Loyalty and Customer at MAIR Group.

Personalization at scale is being redefined with real-time data and AI. What innovations are you seeing in customer loyalty and experience powered by these technologies?

I still remember the moment we first switched on the recommendation engine for a retailer’s loyalty program—it was like flipping the lights on in a dark room. Suddenly, we weren’t just sending offers; we were sending the right offers, to the right customers, at exactly the right time.

The loyalty program already covered 70% of the retailer’s sales, but we knew we weren’t maximizing its potential. So we built a suite of propensity models and dynamic targeting tools that stitched together in-store behavior, online clicks, and past purchase patterns. It wasn’t about pushing promotions—it was about understanding intent.

The results were game-changing: conversion rates soared to 45–65%, and we saw a 3% uplift in incremental spend—from customers who felt, for the first time, that the brand actually knew them.

That project wasn’t just a success on paper—it sparked a shift in mindset. We proved that loyalty isn't about discounts or points - it’s about precision. Real-time data and AI are rewriting the playbook. Think: rewards that shift dynamically based on your cart, pricing that adjusts based on loyalty tier, or personalized promotions triggered by intent, not just past behavior.

It’s loyalty, but on steroids.

With the rise of no-code and low-code AI platforms, how do you see the role of data science teams evolving?

The democratization of AI is a gift, and the rise of no-code platforms has truly leveled the playing field—today, it’s those who combine curiosity with courage who are driving the next wave of transformation.

As business teams gain the power to build, test, and launch with no-code tools, data science teams are evolving into architects of impact. Their focus is shifting from just coding models to unlocking value—championing ethical AI, enabling scalability, and translating complex business challenges into intelligent, actionable solutions.

Data science is no longer confined to the back office. It’s stepping into the boardroom. Today’s data scientists aren’t just building tools—they’re shaping strategic direction, influencing decisions, and helping design the business models of tomorrow.

How do you evaluate a company’s readiness to adopt analytics or AI before joining or proposing strategic initiatives?

I look for four signs before recommending any AI or analytics-led transformation:

1. Data without friction – Is the data accessible, connected, and reliable?

2. Curiosity over consensus – Do leaders embrace questions, or default to gut instinct?

3. Champions at the top– Is there C-level backing to turn insights into action?

4. Action-oriented culture – Are teams empowered to test, learn, and scale fast—or do insights sit in PowerPoint decks?

For example, before rolling out analytics transformation, we always begin with a focused pilot— to understand challenges & opportunities, demonstrate impact and earn leadership trust. That early success became the springboard for scaling.

What leadership practices have helped you consistently drive innovation while keeping your teams aligned and motivated?

Innovation needs freedom—but also focus. We start with a clear “why” and give our teams the autonomy to own the “how.”When people embrace a customer-first mindset, they don’t just execute—they innovate. By fostering a fail-fast culture, celebrating brave ideas, and making space for “what if?” conversations, we create an environment where true alignment grows—not from control, but from shared belief and purpose.

Building business, consulting, and analytics teams across continents, we prioritized local ownership, collaboration, embracing tech as an enabler and agility. The result? A passionate, empowered team delivering over 10X ROI and co-creating innovative solutions that drove a 1.1pp market share gain.

This achievement proves that with the right people and shared vision, customer-first leadership becomes a powerful engine for business impact.

After all, if you want to go fast, go alone—but if you want to go far, go together.

What’s next for the intersection of strategy, customer loyalty, and data science? Any future trends you're particularly excited about?

The future is emotionally intelligent loyalty—where customer experience will make or break brands. As we move beyond transactional programs, we’ll see brands using AI to tap into customer emotion, intent, and life moments—offering empathy at scale.

What excites me most is the rise of zero-party data—where customers don’t just passively receive experiences, but actively design their own journeys. They will tell us what matters to them, when and how they want to be engaged. In this new world, customers become the artists, crafting unique loyalty experiences, and we become the facilitators—guiding, listening, and enabling their creative expression.

Imagine a shopper co-creating a rewards program that fits their lifestyle, or a traveler shaping personalized offers around key life events—all powered by real-time data and AI insights.

The future is clear: Customer experience will no longer be a department—it will be the heartbeat of strategy & loyalty- leading to multi-million-dollar margin benefits and a scalable blueprint.

Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self at DSE?

Be curious. Be bold. Be relentless. Don’t wait to feel ‘ready’—you’ll never know enough until you do the thing.

Some of my biggest breakthroughs came when I leaned into ambiguity and led with purpose over perfection. Also: your economics degree is more powerful than you think—it taught you how to structure problems, ask the right questions, and think in systems & models. The world needs more thinkers who can connect dots. Use that superpower.

The same foundation helped me build models, negotiate strategies worth millions, and influence roadmaps across $3B+ portfolios. DSE gave me the blueprint; experience made it real.
